Cognitive Component Processes Mediate the Relationship between World Knowledge and Beginning Readers’ Language Comprehension Scores

Abstract

We identify the predictors of world knowledge and the cognitive components that mediate the knowledge-comprehension relationship. Correlational analysis for 8-year olds revealed that text memory and knowledge integration were strong predictors of world knowledge. Additionally, regression analyses revealed that text memory and knowledge integration completely mediate the knowledge-language comprehension relationship.
