AI Recommendations Impaired Performance in a Confounded Decision-Making Task

To study the effects of unobserved, confounding factors on human decision making, we created a novel, confounded word association task (CWAT). Results demonstrate differing abilities of participants to successfully identify and circumnavigate the confounding factor, with and without the assistance of a faux-assistive intelligence, with main effects by solution strategy.
