Abstract

Mental health is rooted in socioemotional development. In this talk I examine how Black parents’ racial and cultural emotion socialization fosters emotion regulatory flexibility, equipping Black youth to navigate racial and everyday stressors. This adaptive skill set strengthens emotional well-being, promotes resilience, and lays a foundation for lifelong mental health.
