Abstract

How do cultural and personal values motivate divorce? In large archival studies, we study attitudes toward- and actual divorce. We found positive associations with autonomy, self-direction, stimulation, and hedonism values and negative associations with embeddedness, tradition, and conformity values. The impact of personal values was stronger in more autonomous cultures.
