Habitual Recall of Negative but Not Positive Autobiographical Memories Impacts Psychological Wellbeing

Abstract

Using an individual differences approach, 350 undergraduates showed that greater specificity and agency in recalling and regulating negative, but not positive, emotional memories were linked to better psychological wellbeing. These findings suggest that how individuals engage with their memories is key to mental health.
