Beyond Vocabulary Size: How Vocabulary Depth Dimensions Shape Writing and Its Automated Assessment

Abstract

Analysis of 87 college students revealed distinct roles of vocabulary dimensions in writing quality. While breadth primarily prevented errors, depth facilitated sophisticated expression. Notably, automated writing features' predictive power diminished when accounting for vocabulary measures, suggesting these features primarily reflect underlying vocabulary competence.
