Abstract

Seven preregistered studies (N = 1988) using multi-wave, cross-sectional, and experimental designs, quantitative and qualitative data, and Western and Eastern samples robustly show that having unclear self-views increases fear of being single. This effect is parallelly mediated by heightened relationship-contingent self-esteem, need to belong, and concerns about singlehood stigma.
