How Do Instructors Influence Student Motivation through What They Say and Do?

Abstract

We explore how instructors’ messaging and behaviors impact student motivation, examining effects through an expectancy-value framework. Using a 2x2 factorial design, we manipulated the presence and absence of expectancy and value-focused course elements in course syllabi to investigate their effects on students’ anticipated performance and interest.
