Abstract
Five experiments (N = 1,117) revealed participants consistently underestimate the hedonic and social benefits of conversations about boring topics while assessing interesting topics with relatively greater accuracy. This pattern was held across conversations virtually and in-person, between friends and strangers, and carried over to subsequent conversations about different boring topics.
