Elaborating on Goals Changes Goal Perceptions and Undermines Progress

We examined how elaborating on a personal goal impacted progress and perceptions of goal characteristics. Participants listed three personal goals, elaborated on one, and rated goal characteristics before or after elaboration. Elaborating changed certain goal ratings. More progress was made on non-elaborated goals after two, but not four weeks.
