Abstract
The current study examined possible explanations for why first-generation college students earn lower GPAs than continuing-generation students. Based on previous research, three alternative explanations were tested. Results suggest first-generation students’ GPAs may be lower because of differences in previous academic preparation rather than differences in academic stress or household income.
