Abstract

Women communicate less abstractly than men across different contexts. This study examines descriptive and prescriptive expectations about gender, status, and communicative abstraction, finding that men and leaders are expected to communicate more abstractly than women and employees. Furthermore, these gendered expectations about communicative abstraction are descriptive rather than prescriptive.
