Understanding PTSD and Trauma in Immigrant Populations: Neurobiological and Sociocultural Perspectives
- Jason Izadi
UBC
Abstract
Immigrants face unique challenges that heighten their vulnerability to PTSD, particularly among refugee children and women. This study reviews neurobiological changes, including hippocampal atrophy and amygdala hyperactivity, and emphasizes culturally sensitive interventions. Findings highlight the need for trauma-informed approaches that consider immigrants' compounded pre- and post-migration stressors.
