Abstract
This longitudinal investigation involved 1741 adolescents who were followed over three annual assessments to assess links between social anxiety and social status. We found transactional relationships: Unpopularity (social status) was a precursor of heightened withdrawal (social anxiety), and conversely, increased withdrawal predicted greater unpopularity later on.
