Abstract
Course grades as learning effectiveness criteria are contaminated and therefore mask learning detriments of asynchronous courses. Undergraduate students in an asynchronous course performed worse on exams than those in an in-person delivery of the same course, but achieved similar grades. Learning assessment scores should inform decisions to implement asynchronous courses.
