Abstract

In models of associative learning, negative feedback drives avoidance. However, in many learning contexts, negative feedback is an informative learning signal indicating the need to reason about alternative courses of action. We found evidence that the D2 dopamine system, which is sensitive to negative feedback, facilitates explicit, rule-guided behavioral control.
