Trait Empathy Dissociates Motivational Direction from Valence in Emotional Experience

Abstract
We examined dispositional influences on the dimensional structure of affect. A sample of 237 university participants viewed diverse images of suffering in others or personal threats. Higher trait empathy predicted greater feelings of avoidance motivation and negativity towards threat; but for suffering, higher empathy predicted greater approach motivation and negativity.
