Achievement motive strength determined effort mobilization—operationalized as cardiovascular reactivity—in an achievement task with unclear difficulty. The affiliation motive did not influence effort despite the presence of affiliation-related incentives, suggesting that task instrumentality can attenuate the effect of motive incentives.
