Task Instrumentality As a Boundary Factor for the Impact of Motives on Effort Mobilization

Abstract
Achievement motive strength determined effort mobilization—operationalized as cardiovascular reactivity—in an achievement task with unclear difficulty. The affiliation motive did not influence effort despite the presence of affiliation-related incentives, suggesting that task instrumentality can attenuate the effect of motive incentives.
