Local and Global Status Insecurities Independently Predict Compensatory Jargon Use

Abstract
We use academic conference poster title data to show that academics use jargon to compensate for two distinct sources of status insecurity. One source is global (their institution) and a second is local (their rank amongst co-authors). Overall this provides evidence for performative & compensatory language use.
