Unclear Self-Concept Sensitizes Individuals to Physical Pain: Based on an Unclear-Vigilant Model

Abstract
We proposed an Unclear-Vigilant Model, linking low self-concept clarity to heightened pain sensitivity. We conducted 12 sub-studies. A meta-analysis of the 12 studies revealed a highly reliable effect (r = −.45, 95% CI = [−0.52, −0.37], Z (21) = −10.11, p < .001): individuals with unclear self-concepts exhibit increased pain.
