Abstract
People express emotions using facial expressions and tone of voice (multimodally). Yet, researchers study each modality separately (unimodally) because they assume that expressions in one modality influence the other. In testing this assumption, we show that facial expressions are differentiable when expressed multimodally versus unimodally, but vocal expressions are not.
