Putting the "Us" in Autonomous: The Differential Effects of Cooperation and Competition on Autonomy

Abstract
In separate surveys of full-time employees, federal employees, and varsity athletes, along with a controlled experiment wherein participants completed a task under competitive, cooperative, or independent incentive structures, we consistently found that cooperation was associated with greater autonomy. In contrast, competition was largely unrelated to autonomy.
