Abstract

Deepfakes are created with artificial intelligence and constiture a novel deception tactic. Humans can discriminate deepfake from real faces when presented in video but not still image format, with higher analytical reasoning and digital literacy enhancing discrimination ability. Machines outperform humans for still images but not for video presentations.
