The Association between Exposure to Violence and Substance Use: The Mediating Role of Depression

The present study evaluated whether depression mediated the relationship between exposure to violence and substance use in a sample of justice-involved youth. Findings revealed that baseline exposure to violence was significantly related to alcohol and marijuana use one year later and depression emerged as a significant mediator.
