The Impact of Appearance Compliments on Women’s Mood and Self-Objectification

In this experiment, undergraduate women (n =219) recalled appearance or competence compliments from men (or a nice view for the control condition) and completed measures of mood and self-objectification. Consistent with objectification theory, writing about an appearance compliment was associated with elevated disgust and anger and higher state self-objectification.
