Young Japanese Children Often Attribute Supernatural Abilities Not Only to God but Also to Their Mothers

Abstract

This study examined young Japanese children's understanding of beings with supernatural abilities. Three studies found that many 4-year-olds believed that their mothers, like God, had the ability to read people's minds and monitor their actions. The concept of God as a supernatural being was developed at the age of six.
