Face Off? Instructor’s Face in Video Lectures Differentially Affects Retention Vs Transfer Learning, but Not Metacognition

Abstract

We explored how instructor presence in pre-recorded video lectures affects students’ perceived and actual understanding, metacognitive accuracy, and performance on retention vs transfer quiz questions. Results suggest the instructor’s visual presence differentially affects retention vs transfer learning, though it does not affect the strength or accuracy of participants’ metacognitive ratings.
