A Novel Psychometric Analysis of the Spelling and Recognition of Complex English Words Reveals Developmental Nuances

Abstract
We developed an orthographic knowledge measure for difficult English words (e.g., “difficult”). Item response analyses show good evidence of validity and reliability based on samples of 189 (Grades 8-12, Mage=15, α=.92) and 69 (Grades 9 to 1st-year college, Mage=17.6, α=.96) English learners in China.
