“There’s Already a Stigma on You”: A Qualitative Study on the Physical Healthcare Experiences of Patients with Psychiatric Conditions and/or Substance Use Disorders in the Emergency Department

Abstract

We conducted interviews with 50 emergency department patients presenting with a physical complaint who had comorbid psychiatric condition and/or substance use disorder. Grounded theory analysis revealed negative and positive healthcare experiences at the provider, treatment, and system levels. Patients provided key suggestions for improving physical healthcare for these vulnerable groups.
