Abstract
As part of a longitudinal study of sibling and friend relationships, we analyzed the ways adolescents use verbal irony in sibling and friend interactions. The typical utterance was jocular, hyperbolic, and affiliative with both siblings and friends, but friends used more ironic utterances overall, with a higher rate of sarcasm.
