Abstract

We study perceptions of intra-ingroup vs. intra-outgroup moral violations. The results of 8 preregistered studies show that intra-outgroup moral judgments are less stringent than intra-ingroup judgments, specifically when the transgression carries group-related content and the perceiver’s cultural, religious, or personal values express ingroup orientation.
