Abstract
This experimental study found that articles from first authors’ surnames with earlier (vs. later) alphabetical order were more likely to be cited. This effect was stronger under the alphabetical (vs. numerical) citation system, suggesting that using alphabetical citation systems may create bias impeding the communication and dissemination of knowledge.
