Lowering Barriers to Success: A Synergistic Mindset Intervention Improves Academic Outcomes across First-Generation and Continuing Generation College Students

Abstract
We examined whether a synergistic mindsets intervention (SMI), which taught students to reappraise stressors, could promote challenge-seeking among first-generation (FG) college students. We found FG students were more sensitive to academic stressors, but this didn't reduce challenge-seeking. The SMI sustained challenge seeking across all students when complemented by supportive messages.
