Ambiguous Loss: How Birth Parents' Bereavement after Adoption Placement Affects Their Future Parenting

Abstract

Birth parents who place their child for adoption often experience grief and loss. This study revealed birth mothers' grief following adoption was associated with poorer parenting and parent-child relationships toward another biological child they were rearing 7 years later. This effect was mitigated when birth mothers received high social support.
