Abstract

Research with critically-ill newborns suggests that increasing mother-infant physical contact after birth reduces postpartum depression risk, however, the impact in healthy mother-infant pairs had not been examined. In a randomized controlled trial with 100 low-income mothers, we found that providing mothers with an infant-carrier decreased depressive symptomatology at 6-weeks postpartum.
