Abstract
This pre-registered study showed, contrary to theories, higher variability in using emotion regulation strategies across time predicts lower negative emotion differentiation interindividually and intraindividually in 88 adolescents. Results prompt reconsiderations on the directionality and temporal sequence of how negative emotion differentiation and emotion regulation influence each other.
