Abstract

Results from six studies suggest that disadvantaged group members experience higher ingroup pride in the dominant outgroup language, regardless of audience visibility. Self-reported pride seems to reflect emotional experience rather than consideration of positive self-representation, in which a threat to social identity accounts for the effect of language on pride.
