When Ignorance Is Bliss: Emotional Awareness Moderates Associations between Expressive Suppression and Negative Outcomes

Feelings of inauthenticity mediate associations between expressive suppression and negative outcomes such as poor mood and interpersonal dysfunction. Individuals with low emotional awareness may not feel inauthentic when hiding emotions, buffering against these negative effects. Emotional awareness moderated associations with mood and relationship outcomes in the hypothesized direction.
