Abstract

Across three studies (n=731) we ask if perceived levels of autonomy affect cognitive functioning. In Experiments 1 and 2, participants are randomly assigned to a high versus low autonomy condition, showing a significant effect on causal reasoning. The third study confirms perceived levels of autonomy alter performance on cognitive tasks.
