Abstract

Personal moral behavior is often overestimated relative to peers'. In two behavioral studies, we find this pattern may arise due to underestimated personal self-control in moral behavior. More temptation was expected in peers than the self, and greater expected need for self-control was associated with lower predicted personal ethical behavior.
