Abstract
Orofacial asymmetry analysis was used to examine the laterality of infants' pre-linguistic orofacial behaviours. Smiles and laughs were right lateralised. Babble showed increasing left laterality, with longer utterances showing stronger laterality than shorter utterances, suggesting increasing hemispheric specialisation for sequential vocalisation. These findings support an Emergentist view of phonological development.
