Abstract

Personalization theories predict that asking questions increases interest whereas cognitive load theories predict that asking questions decreases interest. An experiment manipulating student-generated questions, teacher-generated questions or no-questions while working on course-relevant materials showed higher reported situational interest in the no-questions condition, indicating that question-asking may decrease situational interest in mathematics.
