Abstract
We examined specific validity concerns that emerged in each of three response process stages for adults completing self-esteem items varying in positive/negative phrasing and keyword choice. Response processing issues identified in the interpretation and elaboration stages compounded those in response mapping, which compromised the validity of some item score inferences.
