Abstract
On difficult arithmetic problems, children with lower working memory abilities and higher math knowledge tended to use more gesture-based problem-solving strategies than children with higher working memory and lower math knowledge. This suggests that children's use of hand gestures can support their math performance by reducing working memory demands.
