Abstract

Researchers were interested in which defense mechanisms predicted anxious and avoidant attached characteristics in both men and women. Researchers found splitting other, rationalization, devaluation of self, fantasy, withdrawal, and displacement all predicted anxious attachment characteristics in men and women. Undoing, affiliation, isolation, and devaluation of other predicted avoidant attachment characteristics.
