Identifying Imposters: Discriminating AI Created Facial Images Versus Images of Real People

Abstract
This study examined participants' identification skills between real faces and realistic "fake" faces created through the Artificial Intelligence system StyleGAN. 143 participants attempted to distinguish 24 real from 24 AI generated images through qualtrics, with little success. Other possible influencing factors were examined. Implications of these findings are discussed.
