Faculty Who Allocate Worktime in Ways Inconsistent with Their Preferences Report Lower Occupational Satisfaction

We surveyed tenured psychology faculty regarding how they typically and would prefer to spend their work time. The percentage of time typically allocated to teaching, research, service, and administrative activities was unrelated to occupational satisfaction. However, the discrepancy between typical and preferred time allocation was associated with greater occupational dissatisfaction.
