Abstract
Solitary children tend to be excluded by peers, which predicts socioemotional and academic difficulties, but the developmental implications of different types of solitude may vary. For 105 preschoolers, neither shyness, social disinterest, nor preference for solitude predicted peer acceptance, suggesting that solitude may not be maladaptive in early childhood.
