Learning Empathy Via Pavlovian Conditioning

We find that people associate the mental states of others with their own rewards, leading them to develop empathy through Pavlovian conditioning. Participants viewed positive and negative emotional scenes depicting another person; scenes were congruently or incongruently paired with participants' monetary outcomes. Congruent conditioning increased empathy and facilitated instrumental behaviors.
