Fitness Instructors' Appearance-Focused Motivational Comments in Group Exercise Classes

In a survey of group fitness participants (n =213), women reported that instructors frequently made appearance-based motivational comments (e.g., "Shred that belly fat!"). More than half of participants described these comments as their "least favorite" type of motivational comment. Hearing appearance-based motivational comments was positively correlated with body surveillance.
